NO.76, San Diego, California - Honest Sid Gerhart Ring

Meets 6:30 PM, every 2nd Monday of each month at Jack’s Magic Place

4275 University Ave, San Diego CA

This February Ring 76 hosted its 14th Annual Close-Up competition to decide “WHO IS SAN DIEGO’S #1 CLOSE-UP MAGICIAN” . The contest offered a diverse array of close-up magic that ranged from cards, coins, mentalism, comedy, story telling and a production of live animal and involved both professional and amateurs including; Loch David Crane, Tonnie Perrine, Salomon A. Barajas, John London, Jim Thayer, Mago Ruly, Howard Harris, Joe Mystic, Tom McCarthy, Michael E. Johnson, Diane Lane, and Alex Greenbaum. Each contestant performed their ten minute act six times as they went  from table to table.

Here are some highlights from our talented performers......

Michael E. Johnson performed as an “honest” gambler from the old west always dealing himself the winning hand under the “fairest” of conditions.

Toni Perrine charmed us all with her story telling ability and enthusiastic personality.

Loch David Crane as Merlin-ye-Mage delighted us all with his medieval themed magic act and one of a kind props.

Salomon Barajas presented his handling of a marvelous transitional effect known as the “Invisible Quarters” This was definitely the high-light of his act and possibly of the contest, but, that’s just my opinion.

Tom McCarthy opened his act with coins across followed by a repeat signed card to pocket.

John London, new member a certainly a very skilled sleight of hand artist, entertained us with Sam The Bellhop.

Joe Mystic killed with his famous bill exchange and chop cup routine. These were truly commercial effects that were well thought out and brilliantly executed.

Mago Ruly really brought something different to the contest as he magically  produced a live gold fish from small drawing.

Events like these are great learning experiences especially for amateurs interested in becoming professionals, and it also gives the seasoned worker an opportunity to test new material.

The winners of the contest will be announced at our awards and Installation banquet in July.

Ring 76 would like to wish our very own J.P. Jackson a speedy recovery from his recent surgery.
